Line of Events
CIA agent Joe tries to balance his personal and professional life as the spearhead of the CIA’s war against terrorism. Real military advisors helped make weapon handling, house clearing, positioning, squad action, etc. more authentic. Mr. Sheridan knows how to take us into the cold macho worlds of testosterone without cliches and seemingly without intention.
No apologies needed
It is what it is. His characters are always grounded and he is very good at playing them. But to be great, you have to write good roles for women. The script has to be as good if not better than for men. Boys are easy.
Women are smarter, more complex
Beth in Yellowstone (great character and performance), the barrel riders, the lonely ranch hand (the fantastic Jen Landon as Teeter) – all great female characters who fit into the world of the story in a natural and easy way. They are strong and convincing. Not just ‘partner of…’ or T & A. He upped his game with the excellent Faith Hill, played disastrously in 1883, followed by Dame Mirre’s flop ‘1923’. Now Zoe Saldana delivers the best work of her career.
What a twist!
I definitely approve of him being the head of the CIA in an open marriage (nice touch). I appreciate De Oliveira as a broken woman with a burning rage who won’t give up, and thank you, thank you, thank you to the writers/directors/producers for not letting her win over her male counterpart with 100 pounds more muscle. The truth comes first! I find his character much more interesting when he’s someone who needs to be knocked unconscious or simply beaten to the ground before he gives up. Now are we talking about Jill Wagner or should I talk about her hair?
I’ll buy it
From schmaltzy Hallmark junk to super cool special forces? Special mention: Ms. Lanier as the mean teenage daughter. I look forward to the story arc set in this loose canon as long as they continue to avoid the cliché of teenage angst. Good actor, could be interesting…
